Detated Capa

Today is National Beheading Day! While I couldn't find any reason as to why today was a holiday dedicated to decapitation, from what I know of what previous holidays I've celebrated, I'd accept the reason of "Why not?" with just as much readiness as I would an explanation from a professor of holidays. Which is a job that I think should exist.

There have been a lot of fairly famous beheadings throughout history. Most have been kings and queens, but there were plenty of not-so-well known ones as well. After all, it was a major, if not gruesome, form of execution back in the day.

Now since I don't own a guillotine (not even one of those miniature ones that cut cigars), I can't truly celebrate the meaning of today. Plus, there would have been a few legal issues to work out had I gone through with it. So, instead, I settled for simple eating gummy bears head first. Although, I suppose I could find a video game or two with some beheadings. Mostly zombie ones... does undead decapitation count?

Visiting Lizzy

Today is Visitation of the Virgin Mary Day! Today is a day that celebrates the day when the Virgin Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth. Mary was pregnant with Jesus while Elizabeth was pregnant with John the Baptist. Elizabeth blessed Mary and her unborn child, and John jumped around in Elizabeth's womb. This isn't really a major religious holiday, but it's still viewed by a number of churches (most catholic). It's also celebrated by one of the most time honored celebrations in existence: Feasting. I don't see any specifics as to what is in the feast, so I'm to assume that (since it was a holiday created in the medieval days) it's mostly meat and drink. Feasting, in my opinion, is by far the best way to celebrate. It's simple, it's easy, and it's fun. What's great about a feast is the variety. Anybody can be involved! Vegetarian? Salad! Carnivore? Steak! Normal person? EVERYTHING!

Regardless of what you eat today, remember the spirit of the holiday. Try reading into the event and seeing what significance you can find in it to take away. (Trust me, you'll always find something to take away). The biblical references for the event are: Luke 1:41 (That's the exact verse, but read the whole chapter for context ( 'cause context is good for you))

A Road Often Travelled

Today is Rocky Road Day! Today is a late update due to the fact that I was sleeping or away from the internet and eating with real life people. However, it is all forgiven because Rocky Road is simple, fast, and delicious to celebrate. Rocky Road is ice cream (usually chocolate in my experience) mixed with chunks of chocolate, nano-marshmallows, nuts, and maybe even some chunks of brownie. You can find it at almost any ice cream shop worth going to, or you could make it yourself at one of those newfangled 'serve yourself' types of ice creameries. I highly recommend you DO eat some today. Quickly, because there is just less than two hours left to celebrate. I don't care if you just had a two taco meal with rice and beans and finished it of with a large slice of what looked like a 7 layer chocolate cake topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce. ... so full... I might just have a Narrow Rocky Road (1 scoop)

On Fire

Today is Fire Day! I found very little information about this specific day online, but I'm fairly sure I can figure it out. I would think that it is a day to celebrate the coolest (not literally) element (classical, not periodical) there is. Fire does many things... or rather it does few things, but those things have a large plethora of uses. Now before all you arsonists and pyromaniacs go crazier than normal, I'm going to have to ask that you keep your fiery celebrations under control. Don't light a forest or house or small mammal on fire. Keep it to things that are safe while still being able to be amazed by the fire as it crackles. Did you know that the amount of fire directly relates to how many people are involved? It's true. Here's some facts I made up, but should be taken without question:

Bonfire: Huge party on a hill with tons of people
Campfire: Pow-wow of small friends reminiscing
Fire in a grill: Family picnic
Fireplace: Two people having a serious conversation about life
One candle on a table: All that is needed to perfectly set the mood for a dinner that is otherwise lit by the burning love of two star-crossed lovers whose hearts shall surely be aflame for all eternity.

Whoa... Sorry. Didn't mean to get all poetic on you. It just happens sometimes.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time

Today is Peanut Butter and Jelly Day!

I have been waiting for today for at least a week. Peanut Butter and Jelly is one of those combinations that completely changes your life forever. If you have not eaten a PB&J sandwich, I strongly urge you to make one today and savor it's flavor. There is just one rule for your first PB&J that you have to follow at all costs: Keep it simple!

White bread, Smooth Peanut Butter, and Grape Jelly are the ingredients you will use.

White bread: It is a simple yet time-tested bread and will not interfere with the flavours of the PB&J while still providing a very soft encasement for them

Smooth Peanut Butter: Doesn't really matter what brand, although I usually use Jiffy. You DO want smooth, though because it's a risk. For your first PB&J we want safety. Go smooth for a no-crunch, all-flavour sandwich.

Grape Jelly: This is where things get specific. You will need Welch's Grape Jelly. They are the masters of grape, so it would simply be foolish to choose another. Why Grape? It's the starter flavour. It is your base camp on the PB&J mountain. The foundation to your PB&J pyramid. Also the cement. After your first PB&J, you can take risks and venture out into strawberry or apple or what-have-you, but you will want to eat grape first so that you know you can always go back to it. And you WILL come back to it. Why Welch's? I've already told you: They know grapes better than any other jelly. I've tried other brands and it just never is as good as Welch's is. In fact I'm going to look up Welch's and email them a "Thank you for being so awesome" note.

[EDIT]
Holy Cow! Welch's has a twitter and they are also celebrating PB&J Day! That makes them 10 times more deserving to be the J to your PB!

Oh, you know, nothing much.

Today is Old Stuff Day! At first I thought it would be celebrating actual old things that I had lying around my room, and while there is a lot of things lying around my room (I really need to clean), I wasn't sure if any could really be called "old". Luckily for me, that's NOT what today is about. A few quick google searches landed me a "How to celebrate Old Stuff Day". There, I found out that it was a day to acknowledge the common saying of "Nothing much, same old stuff" when someone is asked what's going on in their life or what they've been up to. Today is dedicated to actually finding out if there is literally nothing new at all in their lives at all, and if there isn't, to help them change that. It's also a day to do the same thing introspectively. Change up your daily routine somehow to make sure YOU don't answer a "What's up?" with "Eh. Same old, Same old."

That's actually what this whole holiday-a-day blog thing was meant to do for me. Last year was very routine and dissatisfying, so while looking for a way to make it a little more interesting, I found out that there is a holiday every day. Since all of the holidays are different, and it's daily, it worked just well enough for a person with my "Right now" mindset to want to get involved in. 24 hours of celebrating something, and then onto something else. It actually has changed up my daily routine, and thus far I feel safe in saying that this year will not be like the others. Both in this sense, and just a feeling that somethings gonna happen. So today, I will do the exact opposite of what I did last year: Go somewhere and have meaningful conversations with people.

P.S. Incase you are wondering, last year's March 2nd was probably video games and college classes.

iPure

Today is Purification Day, and with the power out, I only got to research so much of it. From what I can tell, it is a day celebrating one of the early moments in Jesus' life. I couldn't find one specific celebration type, but one thing is for sure, most of them involved lighting candles. I am aaaaall for lighting candles on a cold day such as this, and might even just light a fire. I also have been wanting to get rid of all songs in my iTunes that might hinder my efforts to become a better Christian, so I shall do that as well. Hopefully the internet will be back by tomorrow, and I can find out more about the 3rd's holiday.

New Ideas

The second day of celebration is underway, and I once again find myself with a somewhat easy day to celebrate. "Run it Up the Flagpole and See Who Salutes" Day is the holiday for January 2nd, and I at first thought "I have no flag or flagpole, and I hardly want to wait around all day under one and count who salutes as I can probably ballpark that number at somewhere under 10." Luckily for me and my immune system (it's 30ºF outside and a little windy), that is not what the holiday is truly about.

No, "Run it up the flagpole (and see who salutes)" is an old phrase from around 60 years ago and means something to the affect of "Put out a new idea to see the general reaction to it." Much easier than standing under a cold pole in the winter resisting the urge to see if my tongue would really stick to it, right? If you truly thought hard about it, we are at no shortage for new ideas, but our filtering system has gotten so quick at auto-deleting the ones we deem as "stupid", "inefficient", or "incredibly life-threatening" that we may never run them by anybody. We have also become a little quick to shoot down others' ideas if they inconvenience us. In simpler terms, we've replaced our childhood's "What if" with a grown up "How about not?".

So today, I will resist no urge to suppress any idea I have, no matter how outlandish. If I think of a solution, I will recommend it instantly. All thoughts of innovation will be noted and then scrutinized by others, but I will have at least tried. None of my ideas may work, but I will have contributed all that I possibly could, and who knows, maybe pieces of my ideas would work with another person's idea.

After all, it would seem to me that other people's strange ideas have worked at at least some level of success for them.
