Cold Music

Today is Ice Cream and Violins Day! Now, at first I thought this was two separate holidays, but as it would happen: It isn't. That made explaining the meaning of this holiday much harder. The celebration is still almost the same thanks to the 'and' between the two, but there is actually no solid explanation that I've found. Only theories. So... here is my theory.

Question: Ice cream is a cold treat, and is a summer favourite (as seen by all the ice cream holidays). So why would we celebrate it in December? A month notorious for it's lack of heat.

Answer: I do not know yet, so let's move on to violins.

Fact: Violins are known for being cued for either one of two things in musical scores made for the silver screen: sharks and sadness.

Other Fact: Ice cream has very little to do with sharks. However, dramatic characters that are sad turn to one of two foods to help ease their weepy pains: Chocolate or Ice Cream.

Less-than-Fact: Chocolate give a warming sensation that causes the eater to be just the slightest bit happier. While Ice cream does the same thing, it doesn't to it to the same extent, especially if it has no chocolate in it.

All of it Put Together: Violins can be said to be known for being a sad instrument, and Ice Cream can be a treat to eat while you are sad. So today must be a day to grab a pint (of ice cream, mind you), crank up the Tchaikovsky, and wallow! What're you waiting for? Get to it!

Eat it Fast, it Doesn't Last

Today is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day! Today combines two of my favorite things to eat: Ice Cream and Sandwiches. I love ice cream sandwiches because thats exactly what it is. What you see is what you get. It's a simple summer time treat and it's not going to throw you off with any crazy surprises like a fruit center. The one problem with it is that it is by far the fastest melting kind of frozen good you could eat. Due to the fact that you eat it in the heat of the summer and you are holding it with your hands that have been warmed by the sun, there is no buffer zone for it to keep it's cool. But, that doesn't really matter all that much because you usually eat it so fast that only a few drops of ice cream hit the sidewalk and immediately evaporate. Plus, you are left with parts of the bread (which is chocolate by the way) coating your fingers and you lick that off. Which is the final step of eating an ice cream sandwich. If you wash your hands you did it wrong and must start again. My favorite cream sandwich right now is the one made by M&M's. Its ice cream in between two sugar cookies filled with M&M's! Here look!

DELICIOUS!

Saturday Sundae

Today is National Vanilla Ice Cream Day! I'm pretty sure I've mentioned vanilla ice cream is by far my favourite "base" flavour of ice cream. Literally any topping can be added to it because it just lends itself to other flavours. Anyway, today is pretty simple and I got it done in less than a half hour. So, you go to Target or whatever you grocery store or market stall of choice is and buy some vanilla ice cream. You then take it home, decorate it according to your tastes, and eat it. I'm not going to tell you how to top it or eat it because everyone has their own perfect bowl of ice cream and I'm not going to taint your mind with my ideas. Even though it's pretty much a fact that I'm the pro-est ice cream bowl maker alive.

Brain freeze

Today is National Ice Cream Day! Today is also really, REALLY hot. So I didn't get a picture of the ice cream I did eat since it melted so fast. I DID get brain freeze, though. That's always fun. What's even worse is when you whole spine feels frozen and your eyes start watering up and soon your whole skeleton feels like it's just going to shatter if a gentle breeze touches you. Anyway, pick whatever flavor of ice cream you want, but if you want to knock out two scoops with one spoon then you should know that...

Today is also National Peach Ice Cream Day! The first holiday is actually meant to be celebrated on the third sunday of July (today), but this one is always on the 17th. Now that you know, you won't almost miss one because your calendar is messed up like mine was.

Chilled Innovation

Today is Creative Ice Cream Flavour Day! Today is a day to come up with, or search for a creative ice cream flavor. My favourite ice cream (in america) is probably Ben & Jerry's Americone Dream. It's not really TOO much of a stray from what you'd expect to taste in ice cream, but it's good and original. However, my favorite ice cream in the world is the KnickerBocker glory that I had at Cox's Yard in Stratford Upon Avon. It had gooseberry ice cream! I didn't know that existed, but I am now addicted to it.

Oh... right... mine didn't last long enough to get a good picture of it...
Here's a picture of one that my friend had! (And practiced more self control on)

Pro Tip: (If you tilt your screen, you can see what other food we had on that check)

Frosted Mug

Today is Ice Cream Soda Day! More known to me as a "Float", Ice Cream Sodas have been around for just about as long as ice cream and soda. This month has been filled with holidays geared towards ways to cool down in the summer (this being the third ice cream centric day), but today is arguably the most delicious. In my mind, there is nothing like a cold root beer with a single scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. That says summer. Root beer just willingly lends itself to the flavour that vanilla brings. I can't even write about it without wanting one. I don't have root beer OR vanilla ice cream on me right now, either, so I have to go find some pretty much immediately. So bye.

Chocolate Cooling System

Today is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day! As a human being, I love chocolate. As someone near the equator, I like cold things. So naturally I would like cold chocolate. Sometimes cold chocolate can be too cold (frozen in scientific terms), though. That's why I'm thankful that someone made chocolate ice cream. I don't know whether or not it was the second or third flavour or ice cream, but I do know that it is the second best (vanilla is the best due to it's addonability). However, if you don't want to complicate your ice cream with syrups and chunks of cookies, then chocolate is the way to go. This is not to say that chocolate can't handle certain toppings well. I'm saying chocolate can stand strong alone. In fact, some may argue that the best kind of toppings for chocolate ice cream would be chocolate syrup or Charleston Chews. Man those things are good when they're cold. Just so good. There's no better way to cool down in the summer. There are better ways to stay hydrated though.

A Road Often Travelled

Today is Rocky Road Day! Today is a late update due to the fact that I was sleeping or away from the internet and eating with real life people. However, it is all forgiven because Rocky Road is simple, fast, and delicious to celebrate. Rocky Road is ice cream (usually chocolate in my experience) mixed with chunks of chocolate, nano-marshmallows, nuts, and maybe even some chunks of brownie. You can find it at almost any ice cream shop worth going to, or you could make it yourself at one of those newfangled 'serve yourself' types of ice creameries. I highly recommend you DO eat some today. Quickly, because there is just less than two hours left to celebrate. I don't care if you just had a two taco meal with rice and beans and finished it of with a large slice of what looked like a 7 layer chocolate cake topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce. ... so full... I might just have a Narrow Rocky Road (1 scoop)

Early Bird Gets the Earworm

Today is Dance Like A Chicken Day! I like to imagine that all the peoples of the world know this dance by heart. It's played at many social events to "break the ice" or "get things started" or "make everyone equally foolish looking so that we are all on the same playing field by the end". I've heard that, along with the Cupid Shuffle and organ music, it's also popular at weddings. Why? I dunno. Probably for the same reasons PLUS the memory making capability. This song burns itself and any moment you dance to it into your brain forever. So today, take some time out of your day to dance like a chicken. Your worries will flow away like water off a duck's chicken's back.

So the story goes...

I've never actually known a town that had a legend of it's own aside from large scale things such as the Loch Ness and other stories like it. Thanks to Cordova Ice Worm Day, I now know that there is a small town in Alaska called Cordova which has a festival to celebrate their very own legendary... beast? I mean their worms, but legendary beast sounds better than legendary worms. In fact the latter sounds like something you would want to get an immunity shot for. They are the ONLY place that has a celebration dedicated to this rarely seen worm, and they celebrate it right. By that I mean: they celebrate it in ways that I've always pictured a small town with it's own legend should. Games. Not just any games, though! Games that you would only find in a small town, which makes them rare and fun and usually very family friendly. There is the usual parade and exhibits, sure, but something tells me the real hidden fun is in such gems of games as " oyster Shuck-n-Suck, longest beard, best legs, and tastiest smoked salmon, among others". they even have a Miss Ice Worm Pageant! How would you ladies like to hold that title?

Now, unfortunately, I can't travel to alaska and back in day. I may be able to convince my family to do a few friendly competitions, and perhaps make everything I do today a game in my head. That's the best that I can do as of yet, though. Although maybe I could find some way to call someone in Cordova and wish them a happy day.
