Today is Kiss-and-Make-Up Day! Today would be the perfect day to go and talk with that person you've been arguing with for the past while over such a petty subject. I mean really... why did this even become a huge thing between you two? Man up (or woman up) and tell them you are so over it. Because you, like, totally are. ... Alright seriously though, today is a great day for ending an argument. Especially if you are in a relationship (in case you didn't notice that first part of the holiday (wink wink nudge nudge)).
I haven't been in an argument with anyone lately, though... So I mean... I really don't know what to do? Should I... should I start one and then just give them a smooch? Maybe? ... Worth a shot I guess. I'll keep you updated on how that goes.

Company
Today is National Cheer Up The Lonely Day! Being lonely sure can be a saddening experience, so it stands to reason that lonely people could use the occasional pick-me-up. As it so happens, there is one sure-fire cure for loneliness: company. Crazy right? Spending time with someone who is alone makes them not alone simply because of the fact that you are with them! While you can cheer them up through a letter, over the phone, or online, it just isn't the same at all. Spend some time with someone in your life that you think may need a little company. Don't limit it to just today, either. Everybody needs somebody to talk and hang out with, so why only be that person one day a year? Even self-proclaimed "lone wolfs" get lonely. In fact, they are sometimes among the loneliest. So do your best to spot those in need and give them some time out of your routine!

Mt. Falderal
Today is Clean Up Your Room Day! Today has finally come, and I feel a strange combination of excitement and indigestion. Knowing that there was a holiday dedicated to cleaning my room, I've spent at LEAST a month not cleaning it. Needless to say, the effects of that have piled up quite literally. This isn't any kind of normal messy room. This is worse than it has ever been. There's trash, books, papers, receipts, dishes, laundry, and possibly even small pieces of furniture that have been gathering in lumps. Today is the day that I have to force myself to wade through it all and clean up this mountainous mess. The only thing that will keep me going is the knowledge that I will no longer have only two "safe step zones" when I'm done. Wish me luck.

Lamb Paste
Today is Paste-Up Day! This celebration is aimed at anyone who works in industries like newspaper, magazines, or anything that involves typeset and illustration. I used to have a subscription to Nintendo Power when I was younger, and loved it because it was all that I needed to know without me having to search the internet for each individual article. I do NOT want to see newspapers and magazines be 'outdated' by the internet, which is one of their main fears. So go do them a favour and purchase some hard copies of your favourite paper or magazine, and maybe even think about getting a subscription.
Today is also National Roast Leg of Lamb Day! Now, I learned last year in Wales that lamb is delicious. When I saw this holiday coming up, I got pretty excited because it gives me an excuse to both have it again, and to try making it on my own. If there were a restaurant that I knew served lamb, I would be going today, to be quite honest, so instead I'm settling for making it on my own. I've already found mint sauce, which is what they gave us as a delicious, yet optional addition in Wales, so in my beginner-cook mind, I'm already half-way there.

Things are Looking Up
Today is Look Up At The Sky Day! Today is a day to look up at the sky at least once to see all of the things that could happen up there. Find some clouds that look like objects or animals or see if you can take a blurry video of a frisbee and freak out the people at Area 51. If you live in a place similar to where I live, chances are that you will more than likely only see the sun. If that's the case, try not to look up the sky for too long, as you may or may not go blind. In fact, I think all of us may want to limit the time we look up at the sky today, as people may start to think that you are very crazy. It might be fun to look up just to see how many other people look up with you in an attempt to see what you're looking at, though.

Funnel Spinach?
Today is Spinach Festival Day! Today is a day to pay some tribute to spinach by eating it or cooking it or at least watching Popeye the Sailor cartoons. I just got back from Six Flags and the combination of the hot, hot sun plus walking around for hours has left my stomach in quite a moody state, so I think I'll stick to watching Popeye. I also just don't have any spinach, and frankly am not well versed at all in what to make with it. Aside from Spinach Salad. Recipe: Spinach + Plate + Dressing?* (*may not be necessary)
Today is also Make Up Your Own Holiday Day! I assume that every year I can make a new one, and that my decision for today will not make every subsequent M.U.Y.O.H.D. the same celebration. In light of that made up knowledge, I choose to dub today "Funnel Cake Day". Funnel Cake is delicious. Even when it is as overpriced as it was at Six Flags, there is just no getting around the fact that it is an absolutely mouth watering treat. I mean look at this:
How could you not want to eat that?

Never Again
January 14th... is a day that I at first did not like the idea of, but it won me over. National Dress Up Your Pet Day at first would seem like a day that furthers the idea that it is okay to put your pet in a sweater during the winter, or that they need a sun hat in the summer. They don't. However, I thought about it and came to the conclusion that this holiday is okay in my book, as long as it is the ONLY day when this is allowed. Now, I know... I know... they look cute all dress up like us peoples do. Admittedly, yeah it can be pretty cool to see a well-thought out costume for a person an their dog on halloween. The best costumes however, do nothing to the dog! Got a little black yorkie and a brunette girl? One basket later, it's Dorothy and Toto from Wizard of Oz. Got an elderly man and a Jack Russell Terrier? Grab a cane and it's Eddie and Martin from Frasier. Got a yellow lab and a small child? Give the kid a gun and it's Old Yeller.
... That last one was a little dark, but my point stands. They don't need a costume or clothes to be cute or cool. That said, I'm not going to yell at people that I see who DO dress up their pets, I just don't see me ever doing it myself. However, it is the holiday of the day, so to make good on my promise, I have to. I only have an extra shirt from Build-a-Bear to use, though, as the pants do not fit. So here ya go. New Ideas
The second day of celebration is underway, and I once again find myself with a somewhat easy day to celebrate. "Run it Up the Flagpole and See Who Salutes" Day is the holiday for January 2nd, and I at first thought "I have no flag or flagpole, and I hardly want to wait around all day under one and count who salutes as I can probably ballpark that number at somewhere under 10." Luckily for me and my immune system (it's 30ºF outside and a little windy), that is not what the holiday is truly about.
No, "Run it up the flagpole (and see who salutes)" is an old phrase from around 60 years ago and means something to the affect of "Put out a new idea to see the general reaction to it." Much easier than standing under a cold pole in the winter resisting the urge to see if my tongue would really stick to it, right? If you truly thought hard about it, we are at no shortage for new ideas, but our filtering system has gotten so quick at auto-deleting the ones we deem as "stupid", "inefficient", or "incredibly life-threatening" that we may never run them by anybody. We have also become a little quick to shoot down others' ideas if they inconvenience us. In simpler terms, we've replaced our childhood's "What if" with a grown up "How about not?".
So today, I will resist no urge to suppress any idea I have, no matter how outlandish. If I think of a solution, I will recommend it instantly. All thoughts of innovation will be noted and then scrutinized by others, but I will have at least tried. None of my ideas may work, but I will have contributed all that I possibly could, and who knows, maybe pieces of my ideas would work with another person's idea.
After all, it would seem to me that other people's strange ideas have worked at at least some level of success for them.
