Today is Stupid

Today is Ask a Stupid Question Day! You may be asking: "Kyle, how do I celebrate Ask a Stupid Question Day?" Well, don't worry, because you already have. Just by asking me that! The entire idiom today is referring to is "Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer."

The day was created in the 80's by teachers who wanted the children to be more comfortable asking questions in class, since the 80's were when children started noticing how dumb their questions could be sometimes
because some children were uncomfortable asking stupid things, knowing that others would point and laugh
because the teachers wanted to have more stories about the dumb kids in class to share in the lounge
because the teachers knew that peer pressure was causing some of the children in class to withhold some of their questions, which wasn't conducive to a learning atmosphere.

You can celebrate today by asking all the stupid questions you want! Some might say "There is no such thing as a stupid question". However, there is! If you've been anywhere ever, you know this for a fact. I'm not saying that the person asking the question is stupid, but the question definitely is. Now, I usually give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they hadn't thought it through quite as much as they should have, but today is a free pass to ask before you think! I'm not here to judge. Unless I'm judging how stupid your question is... but I won't judge you. Unless you wear an "I'm with Stupid" shirt. That means that you're stupid enough to hang out with stupid people often enough to wear a t-shirt in order to warn people... and I might judge you for that a little.

News

Today is No News Is Good News Day! Given the history of today, I'm still unsure if this holiday would have been created before or after the events of 9/11. The phrase is to be taken to say that if no news comes, then that in itself is good news. I suppose in a way, that it's true. Seeing as, if you have a project that you've assigned people to and no one ever comes to you with news (aside from "It's done"), then the project must be going well. Either that or your employees are too scared of you to mention anything that does go wrong. The same can be said for media news. If it's a slow news day, it's probably a pretty good day over-all.

With that said, it has been a decade since the 9/11 events, so take some time out of your day to remember and honor all of the people that were affected that day.

Pie is for Eating.

Today is National Raspberry Cream Pie Day! I'm a fan of pies, but not really the cream variety. However, I'm a big enough fan of raspberries that I can put aside my differences for today and have a slice of raspberry cream pie. Which is how today should be celebrated. In case you hadn't gotten the pattern of most food holidays being celebrated by eating the food for which the day is named. I've mentioned before that there are only so many ways I can tell you that you get to eat food today. It tastes good and today gives you an excuse to eat it even if you are on some crazy diet or something. Not much else to say. So... ...yep.

Possibilities

Today is All Is Ours Day! Today is a day to celebrate the things that we all share. I think the most important thing implied in the phrase would be 'potential'. This world was literally made for us and each of us have the potential to do at least one incredible thing during our lifetime. Take some time today to realize all of the things that you share with humanity along with the things that you may contribute to it. I hate to make this such a short post, but I think it might be better to keep it short and simple just like the name of the day itself.

Dudley

Today is Everything You Do is Right Day! It is pretty much the counterpart to yesterday, in the sense that it celebrates the days where everything just seems to go right. Spend today trying to do things that you may have been putting off, because if you are celebrating today correctly, then you will have no problem doing the harder tasks. There isn't really much else to say about today, so get out there and do right!

Being Wrong and Buzzards

Today is Buzzard's Day! This holiday is pretty much exclusive to Ohio, as citizens spend today celebrating the return of the buzzards. Buzzards are apparently also known as turkey vultures, which makes me wonder: Why? Both turkeys and vultures aren't really animals I ever thought about outright celebrating the return of. Aside from thanksgiving or the time I have to decide between a Santa Fe Chicken Wrap or a Turkey Club Sandwich, I rarely think about turkey at all. As for vultures, I've only ever actually seen them in cartoon deserts or The Jungle Book. I thought that maybe it was Ohio's state bird, but I was wrong. Their state bird is the cardinal. I don't understand this holiday, but I suppose if I see a buzzard, I'll give it a smile.

Today is also Everything You Think is Wrong Day! This may seem like a somewhat cruel holiday, and it kind of is. Today is a day spent in the awareness of the fact that some days just do not go right. Well, to be more exact, it's for those days when everything goes wrong. No matter what you think might fix a situation, something will come along and make it worse. We all have had those days, and we all will simply give in to them eventually and watch our day fall apart around us. Don't worry, though. After days like those, the next day always seems so much better.

Polly Wanna Holiday

Today on January 5th, it is Bird Day! A day that is intended for awareness of the plight of birds that are being driven to extinction by game hunters or poachers. Parrots are especially high on this list due to their high demand in the market both legal and illegal. So today, maybe be that guy who brings it up in a conversation. It will make you seem more aware of what is going on in the world as you should already be striving to actually be. Not that I'm even a very avid reader of headlines. Still, it's always nice to be up-to-date on things. And nothing is more up-to-date than an awareness day that is, in fact, this date. So spread the news and don't be a jerk to birds today. Or any day, really. Don't give anyone the bird, either, that's just obscene.
