Today is Gunpowder Day! Also known as Guy Fawkes Day, this is a holiday(?) celebrated(?) in England. I question whether or not I should call it a holiday or say that it is celebrated due to the confusing nature of the day. But I'll do my ignorant american best in explaining it to the internet. Just a real quick side-note before we get started, though. The movie "V for Vendetta" is very strongly related to today and if you go watch it right now, it'll make it easier to explain. So I'll wait for you to get back from doing that.
...
Alright, so just in case your powers of observation aren't as good as Evey's, that movie was fictional. Or very prophetic. Guess we'll find out. That doesn't matter much, though. If you payed attention to what historical facts there actually were in the movie, you're fairly in-the-know.
Guy Fawkes wasn't as much the brains behind the operation as V was in the movie, but instead the 'trigger-man' more or less. He was also the 'fall-man'. Oh right... I guess all of you might not have watched the movie. Well, in an american nutshell: King has laws that small group doesn't like, those guys start a somewhat underground rebellion, they are all caught, Guy Fawkes ends up taking the heaviest portion of the historical blame. Oh, and he's hanged, too.
England celebrates the fact that their plot (to blow up parliament) failed by making bonfires, setting off fireworks, and burning Guy Fawkes' effigy. Children make their own Guys out of pillowcases and whatnot and take them around saying "Penny for the Guy?" in hopes of getting money to buy their own fireworks to set off.
While I, being in America, realize that building a bonfire, setting off fireworks, and burning effigies by myself will get me put in jail no matter how into obscure holidays and European culture the judges in my local area are. Instead I settle for watching V for Vendetta and eating a candy Bo-Bomb with strawberry flavored gunpowder in it.

Fashionably Late
Today is Be Late For Something Day! Today is pretty self explanatory, although I think I should warn you about things that you should definitely not be late for today.
- Your job
- Your child's birth
- Your wedding
- Your court hearing
- Your flight
Anything else is really fair game I suppose. My one rule for myself today is "As long as it doesn't cost me more than 15ish dollars". I should also mention that by 'late' I don't mean a few minutes late to the business meeting and you bring everyone breakfast. Everybody will instantly forgive you. No, you have to be significantly late, but DON'T miss whatever you are supposed to be late to. If you do that, you'll be never. Always better late than never.

Personal Day
Today is Workaholics Day! Today is a day for all the people that have an addiction to work to do one of two things: try to stop working and relax for the day or celebrate the addiction. Now, I'm absolutely zero types of doctor, but in my opinion celebrating an addiction is rarely (if ever) good. So to all my workaholic readers out there, I suggest you take the day off. Eat some calming homemade food. Actually have something delivered because that's less work for you. Use me as an example: I'm updating my daily blog late at night and feeling rushed because I have a video game to get back to. A VIDEO GAME. To get back to! That's so much "not work" it almost hurts.

Summer is Hot?
Today is The Festival of Popular Delusions Day! At least three people on the internet say that today was made by the Germany one day before one year after D-Day. It was meant to basically say "Yeah, world domination was a bit of a delusion wasn't it?" However, this day can be celebrated today by either being delusional, or realizing what the popular delusion is and going against it. A perfect example was brought to my attention this morning (how fortuitous!) when my dad and his friend were saying things to the effect of "Wow it is getting hot?" and "How is is getting so hot?". It then occurred to me that a VERY popular delusion for the people around my area of living (which if you've being keeping tabs, you might be triangulating my position according to things i've said about where i live in previous posts) is simply: Weather.
Now, my homeland area is not known for being the most consistent in short term bursts, but in the long run, it is oh so very predictable. Yet the people always seem surprised by summer heat of winter chill (or lack thereof). We go through it every year and yet for some reason we never see it coming. Well "NO MORE" says I. I will now and forever henceforth never be surprised by the change of seasons, as they are unchangeable and always in the same order. Why should we ever think otherwise?

Nuttin' Bedda'
Today is National Hoagie Day! A 'hoagie' is a term for a large sandwich (usually a sub from what i've seen) that is usually used in Philly. That is what google tells me about the term, anyway. I already knew there were a lot of names for sub sandwiches like grinders, hoagies, and i've even heard train-wreck once? But that guy was weird. However, since today is "Hoagie" day and not "Sub" Day (Which we already had btw), I think I'll go purchase and subsequently eat a Philly Cheesesteak.

All In
Today is Go For Broke Day! Today is a day to put everything you have into doing something that might earn you a very nice prize or reward. I hear this phrase used a lot in poker games or movies about poker games, but every once in a while people use it for random situations. However, in my opinion, it doesn't make much sense. Maybe I'm missing out on something but shouldn't it be something like "Go for it" or "Risk it all". Oh wait those phrases already exist. Still, "Go for Broke" makes it sound like you are going for the end result of being broke. I was under the impression that was not a desirable outcome in any life circumstance. Oh well, enough of that. Today, if there is something that you've been wanting to do, but thought of it as "too risky," it's time to put all your chips in and hold your poker face. Who knows? You could finally get that job/girlfriend/verdict you've been after for a while.

An Inner Round Table.
Today is Multiple Personality Day. Almost every site I went to while researching this day said: "It's an opportunity to get in touch with yourselves." They used that exact phrasing, so I'm assuming I would be wrong to not use it as well. I don't believe I know anybody with multiple personalities, but then again, it says "get in touch with yourself", not "with others' other personalities". So I suppose today can be seen as a way to get in touch with a side of yourself that you might not be all too connected to.
Some examples might be reconnecting with your inner child, getting in touch with your feminine side, or talking to your anger to find out why he is so angry. It can also be a day to just purposefully change personality types throughout the day (It's not the same as just being moody). Mostly though, it seems to be a day of introspection. A day to step back into your own mind and find out what is really going on behind the scenes of your everyday thoughts. Seems like fun!

When you least expect it.
Disaster Day! Today is a confusing day thanks to no real solid information about it available on the internet. Some sites say that you spend it remembering what disasters have happened during your lifetime, and that seems like something that may be good to do every once in a while, so you can both count your blessings that you survived it and maybe see how you can help others that might not have made it out as well as you. Other sites, however say that it is simply a day that disaster is lurking around every corner, and you must be careful and vigilant to avoid it. This also seems like something good to do, as being more aware never hurt anyone. In fact, you should try to be aware of the danger around you ALL the time, but today may be a free day-pass for excessive paranoia, if thats something you've wanted for a while.

Polly Wanna Holiday
Today on January 5th, it is Bird Day! A day that is intended for awareness of the plight of birds that are being driven to extinction by game hunters or poachers. Parrots are especially high on this list due to their high demand in the market both legal and illegal. So today, maybe be that guy who brings it up in a conversation. It will make you seem more aware of what is going on in the world as you should already be striving to actually be. Not that I'm even a very avid reader of headlines. Still, it's always nice to be up-to-date on things. And nothing is more up-to-date than an awareness day that is, in fact, this date. So spread the news and don't be a jerk to birds today. Or any day, really. Don't give anyone the bird, either, that's just obscene.
