Quotidian, Festive Occasions: Chronicled

Today is Dictionary Day! This day is tribute to Noah Webster, who is considered to be the Father of the American Dictionary. Allot time from your itinerary and dedicate it to ameliorate your vocabulary. Be careful, though, or you might end up with a sentence that doesn't sound quite right (like the one before this one). Sure, you can use big fancy words, but does the sentence really flow? Simply knowing the meaning of a word doesn't grant you the ability to use it wherever it replaces a shorter word with the same meaning. Spend time learning the history behind a word, and you may find that it's application in the language is actually quite specific. Today's challenge is to add at least one word into your vocabulary that you can use often. My word of choice is: Growlery. It's a word that Charles Dickens apparently coined for a place that one goes when in an ill temper. So it will be a useful word to use whenever I have the mulligrubs.

Catching Up

I'm back at home and now that I've caught up on sleep I  can spend as much time and bandwidth as I want telling you about the holidays for the past three days!

August 14th was National Creamsicle Day! The closest I got to celebrating that day was eating ice cream, because finding a creamsicle while staying in a hotel is a lot harder than it sounds.

August 15th was National Relaxation Day! I celebrated this day every spare second I could. Which turned out to be a lot since I had an international flight with an 8-hour layover.

August 15th was also National Failures Day! I also celebrated this day in the form of failing to sleep very much at all. I can't express how happy I am that I failed, but the planes and pilots succeeded.

Finally, today is Bratwurst Festival! I have to say that I'm mildly disappointed in the fact that the day I come back is a food holiday since those are so simple to talk about and celebrate. I will say that a fairly recent story I have about hot dog related things is that even though I spent eight hours in Chicago yesterday, I didn't have a chicago style dog. Why? Because no hot dog is worth eight dollars. Maybe I'll try and get one when I'm not in an airport where the prices are set almost as high as the flight paths.

Juggling Again.

Today is World Jugglers Day! By my count, this is the third holiday dealing with juggling this year. I really don't know why juggling has that many. It's not that it isn't a cool talent to have. It's just that I don't think it's three-holidays-a-year cool.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, though... maybe it's World Jugglers Day, not World Jugglers Day. Because if that's the case, then that is a totally different story. I don't know anyone who can juggle worlds, though. I think the closest person would have to be Atlas. And even then, that's only the more modern depiction of him. See, most people think of him as the mythological being that holds up our earth, when in fact he doesn't. He was actually punished (for rebelling against the Olympians) by being forced to hold up the sky. He was put on the western edge of the earth and was told to hold up the sky so that the two would never meet. Plus, I would think the sky would be lighter...

That really makes more sense, too, if you think about it. If he's holding up the sky, that means that there is one point where he always will be just so he can hold the sky away from the earth. If he was holding the earth in the same manner that most of our statues now show him doing, we would constantly see his arms and smell his pit-sweat. And you know when you hold something heavy and it starts to hurt your fingers so you wiggle your fingers just a bit to get a better grip or maybe shrug a shoulder? Yeah he'd do that and we'd be shaking or getting squashed by random fingers constantly.

Anyway... World Jugglers Day.

Just Harvested

Today is Fresh Veggies Day! Like I have mentioned yesterday, I now work at a bakery. At this bakery, we also make sandwiches, salads, and panini sandwiches. One of the most important parts of the recipe is that the veggies be as fresh as possible for maximum delicious savory goodness. We cut the tomatoes, onions, and all other things fresh at least thrice a day. Veggies are, as anybody can tell you, a very important part of a diet. They can only do their best when they are fresh, though. So get them while their hot! Or... cold. It depends on what you order.

Aliens LOVE Purple

Today is Wear Purple For Peace Day! My extensive three pages of google research tells me that today is a day to wear purple for a very special kind of peace: Intergalactic. That's right! For years, aliens have been watching our horribly cruel ways, and this is the only thing that keeps them from making contact with us. The remedy is, of course, to wear purple. You may not be aware of this, but I just drew myself up a degree in Alien Colourography (Pictured Below).

Purple is the universal colour for signifying that the location at which the purple is found has an undeniable and unquestionable peace. After seeing purple in mass quantities, such as the Purple Plateau in Pennsylvania, they will forget all about our past wrong-doings and come down to earth and bestow upon us the "Essence of Purple". They've given us a taste of this essence before as you can see here:

Hopefully if we all wear enough purple, they'll visit us soon. My crayon doesn't fit in the sharpener anymore.

Gonna Crack

Today is National Stress Awareness Day! I am currently chaperoning a drama competition, so I think I feel safe to say that I am aware of stress today. Not my stress, mind you, but I am very aware of theirs. It's hard not to be aware of a stressed teen, really. They'll remind you constantly. Not that I fault them. Today is the big day after all and I wish them luck.

Today is also Eggs Benedict Day! After having one of the more culture exposed teens on this trip explain to me what that is, it sounds pretty good! English muffin, poached eggs, possible bacon? Count me in. Too bad they don't have that as part of the hotels breakfast choices. I guess I'll settle for bacon with bacon.

Today is Everything You Do is Right Day! It is pretty much the counterpart to yesterday, in the sense that it celebrates the days where everything just seems to go right. Spend today trying to do things that you may have been putting off, because if you are celebrating today correctly, then you will have no problem doing the harder tasks. There isn't really much else to say about today, so get out there and do right!

Be-friending Oscar

Today is Do a Grouch a Favor Day, a day to do a little something nice for someone in your life that may be a little grouchy sometimes, or even grouchy all the time. I think that everybody notices someone being a bit of a grouch at least a few times a day, so finding one should be no trouble at all. Helping one "un-grouch" may be a little tough, however. Do they need a talk? A pat on the back? A simple candy bar? Everyone has different things that cheer them up. With me being very sick and stuck at home in bed or on a couch, one would think that there isn't much cheering up that I could do. But I have access to the internet, which is a home for some of the grouchiest grouches in the world. I shall be keeping an eye on the level of grouchiness on my social sites today and try to de-grouchify as many as I can. Like a... superhero of sorts. Awaaaaaay!
