Catching Up

I'm back at home and now that I've caught up on sleep I  can spend as much time and bandwidth as I want telling you about the holidays for the past three days!

August 14th was National Creamsicle Day! The closest I got to celebrating that day was eating ice cream, because finding a creamsicle while staying in a hotel is a lot harder than it sounds.

August 15th was National Relaxation Day! I celebrated this day every spare second I could. Which turned out to be a lot since I had an international flight with an 8-hour layover.

August 15th was also National Failures Day! I also celebrated this day in the form of failing to sleep very much at all. I can't express how happy I am that I failed, but the planes and pilots succeeded.

Finally, today is Bratwurst Festival! I have to say that I'm mildly disappointed in the fact that the day I come back is a food holiday since those are so simple to talk about and celebrate. I will say that a fairly recent story I have about hot dog related things is that even though I spent eight hours in Chicago yesterday, I didn't have a chicago style dog. Why? Because no hot dog is worth eight dollars. Maybe I'll try and get one when I'm not in an airport where the prices are set almost as high as the flight paths.

Trust in Mutts

Today is Mutt's Day! Having been an owner of what I'm 87% sure was a mutt, I can say that mutts make fantastic pets. See, a mutt is a pet (usually dog, although it may stretch over into other species) that is not thoroughbred. It can come from a line of simply two different breeds, or it can have a lot of diverse influence going on in it's DNA. Whatever it's ancestry may be, it always makes for a unique look and personality. These aren't the kinds of dogs that you'll see being paraded around the park like they own it all (their owner might, though). These are the kinds of dogs that like to run freely and get dirty playing with other dogs and small children. They make much better pets than thoroughbreds because they are so much less haughty. Mutts know they aren't perfect, but they're perfectly fine with it. They take what life gives them and make it work. Plus, if Mutts didn't exist, thoroughbreds wouldn't have anything going for them.

Here's a video of some mutts!

All In

Today is All or Nothing Day! Today is a day to put it all on the line! There is no scale of action today, but only the two distinct ends. Either you do all you possibly can to get all your work done and your needs fulfilled, or you don't even try.

There isn't any room for hesitation or neutrality today. No sir, that kind of thing gets you killed in a dog-eat-dog world. One false move and you're gone just because you didn't know when to fold 'em! Be extra careful out there today because all the celebrators of this holiday are going to seem unstoppable. Or very stoppable. If any situation arises, you look it dead in the eye and take it down by the scruff of it's neck. Or... y'know... not.

I Dare You To Read This

Today is Dare Day! Today is a day to challenge and to accept challenges. There are a few ground rules to daring and being dared that I would like to lay down, however.

1) We aren't in 3rd grade anymore. Dares should be things that are hard to do or are widely accepted as impossible. Not something thats just slightly embarrassing. That's weak. (This rule excludes 3rd graders)

2) You can reject a dare. You may want to think about the implications of rejecting a Double Dog Dare. You can never, EVER, under any circumstances reject a Triple Dog Dare.

3) Dares should not be physically harmful to anyone for more than 10 seconds.

Those are about all the rules I have for dares. Otherwise, have at it. Dares are meant to both force someone to do something outside of their usual comfort zone and entertain others. Usually there is no downside as long as at least some structure is adhered to. Today is a great day to do something that you would usually be uncomfortable or scared to do. Jump over that river in the park that looks like you could so make it across in one leap if you got a running start. Squeeze some salted ice in your hand and see if you can hold it longer than your friends current record. Play five finger fillet.*

Treats for Tricks

Today is International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day. As you may have guessed, today is a day to include dogs in your celebration. Although, if you were at one time a child with a pet dog, the curiosity of wondering what exactly a dog treat tasted like has overwhelmed you, and now you know what a milkbone's flavor is. I know I was one of those children, and in fact my mother was standing beside me almost daring me to do it while I ate it. I can tell you right now that it is probably much tastier to a dog than it was to me. I will also say, however, that Petco has dog treats that look like people cookies and taste like them too. Sure, it's not Nabisco, and I won't be going out of my way to get Petco's cookies for me instead of some Chips Ahoy, but they are pretty good. Amazingly good if you take into account that they are meant for dogs.

I'm getting side-tracked. Today, appreciate the existence of dog biscuits and all they are good for. Which is almost exclusively giving to dogs after they have done something that you deem as "Good". And you tell them "Good boy/girl!" as you hand them the treat. This is the proper way to bequeath treats upon canines.
