Cold Music

Today is Ice Cream and Violins Day! Now, at first I thought this was two separate holidays, but as it would happen: It isn't. That made explaining the meaning of this holiday much harder. The celebration is still almost the same thanks to the 'and' between the two, but there is actually no solid explanation that I've found. Only theories. So... here is my theory.

Question: Ice cream is a cold treat, and is a summer favourite (as seen by all the ice cream holidays). So why would we celebrate it in December? A month notorious for it's lack of heat.

Answer: I do not know yet, so let's move on to violins.

Fact: Violins are known for being cued for either one of two things in musical scores made for the silver screen: sharks and sadness.

Other Fact: Ice cream has very little to do with sharks. However, dramatic characters that are sad turn to one of two foods to help ease their weepy pains: Chocolate or Ice Cream.

Less-than-Fact: Chocolate give a warming sensation that causes the eater to be just the slightest bit happier. While Ice cream does the same thing, it doesn't to it to the same extent, especially if it has no chocolate in it.

All of it Put Together: Violins can be said to be known for being a sad instrument, and Ice Cream can be a treat to eat while you are sad. So today must be a day to grab a pint (of ice cream, mind you), crank up the Tchaikovsky, and wallow! What're you waiting for? Get to it!

A Little Stitious

Today is Defy Superstition Day! Defying superstition is a pretty easy thing to do. Especially with science.  My personal studies show that people who break mirrors are only experiencing a little bit of 'bad luck' only by merit of the fact that their mirror is now broken. There are no further instances of exceptionally bad luck that surface immediately, in the short term, or even in the long term. There may be other instances that aren't exactly fortuitous, but they aren't an effect of the mirror breaking. The event's significance is simply amplified in importance simply because the person experiencing it has written it up as inevitable due to their original mistake of breaking a mirror. I don't know why people do it, though. Maybe we find some comfort in finding any sort of scapegoat to stick all of our downfalls onto so whatever happens to us isn't completely our fault. That way we don't go insane with the knowledge that maybe we do, in fact, stink at handling mirrors.

... Anyway, you can celebrate today by walking under ladders or having a black cat cross your path. It doesn't count if you cross it's path. That's good luck. For the cat.

It Wasn't Me

Today is National Blame Someone Else Day! Today is the perfect day to blame anything on anybody near by. I wouldn't say that it is a day to not take responsibility for anything, as some things you do might be good. If anything goes wrong though, just point at your appointed scapegoat of the moment and run away when they aren't looking.

Ignorance is Bliss

Today is Fool's Paradise Day! A "Fool's Paradise" is something that is oft used in literature (a word that I can't not pronounce in a fancy voice) to say that someone is basically blissfully unaware of how false the supposed perfection they are partaking in actually is. That only sounds complicated because I'm horrible at defining it with definitions. So instead, I'll try with theoretical situation!

Think of it like pyrite (Fool's Gold). It's not real gold, but if you don't have the geological know-how to discern that on your own, or if you don't go get it appraised by an expert, you may never know. And you can horde all that fake gold in your house or even build your house out of it. And it will be shiny and pretty and you'll be so happy thinking that your whole life is gold, sunshine, and puppies with day-long lollipops stuck to their heads because that's probably adorable. In this scenario, you would be a fool in a fool's paradise.

You can celebrate today by NOT being trapped in a Fool's Paradise. See, I would say go ahead and do it, but they are dangerous things. You might think "Oh, I'll just stay a day and be done with it.", but before you realize it you've been there for years! Trapped with the rest of the Lotus-Eaters! Your only hope is if someone too smart to be fooled comes by and drags you out of it so you can go home again!

But, I mean, hey... your choice right? I think I'll just spend today putting extra effort into not being put into a Fool's Paradise. I prefer the real kind.

Juggling Meals

Today is National Juggling Day! There was National Juggler's Day on April 18th, which was mainly about the actual professionals, I suppose. Today must be about the activity itself. What other possible reason could there be? That's an honest question. I'd like to know why there are two days that are juggling related. I hardly think a normal year even involves me seeing something juggled twice on separate days. Well, whatever the reason, the celebration is simple. Juggle something. Balls, Bricks, Balls made of bricks... whatever works.

Today is also Kitchen Klutzes Of America Day! Ever been to a restaurant and heard a crash in the back or are you the type that stays home and almost sets the house on fire with your own cooking? Well, today is a day to not feel as bad about it. At restaurants, the crowd will usually clap when a waiter drops a stack of dishes. At home, you and your friends be joking about/at your mishaps for about a year, and jokes are always fun!  If you know someone who is horrible at keeping things in one piece in the kitchen, today might be the day to not ridicule them as much and risk them preparing your meal.

I found a video semi-related to both holidays! Huzzah! Warning: This man is NOT a Kitchen Klutz.

Leprechauns Wrecked My Blog

Today is Leprechaun Day! Most people throw leprechauns into their St. Patrick's Day celebration in March, but these crazy little guys deserve their own day. There is a plethora of different kinds of leprechauns from kind and child-loving to cruel and mass-murdering. You can celebrate today by hanging out with any quirky, short, red-headed people you know, OR you can spend the day in search of gold. Go buy a small pot and put a bunch of dollar coins in it! (Dollar coins are about as close as you can get to real gold coins on short notice).

Also, yesterday was Limerick Day, but leprechauns blogger seemed to invade the internet have technical difficulties and has absconded with my creative writings deleted my post about it. I would re-write it all if I remembered what I had written, but just know that it was and will be a day to write/read limericks. A limerick has a rhyme scheme of AABBA, which means lines 1,2, and 5 should rhyme while 3 and 4 have a separate rhyme. Here's my favorite limerick I've ever written:

"I once was the world's greatest poet,
Though many of you didn't know it.
But I hit my head
On the edge of my bed,
And now I can no longer rhyme." - Kyle

Pointing the Finger

Today is Blame Someone Else Day! This is yet another holiday which we have had before (Jan 13). It's understandable because we as humans love to point the finger at someone else. Just look at auctioneers, traffic officers, and umpires. Now, pointing the blame to someone else is not very much appreciated by anybody within view of the situation, but today is a free pass to do it anyway. Whether it's a one-time use ticket or one that lasts until midnight tonight is up to you and yours.

P.S. I've finally taken the 5 minutes out of my day to make it possible for you to comment anonymously. For those of you who don't know what that means, it means that you shouldn't have to sign up for any accounts of any sort to comment in the text box below. For those of you who don't understand computers well enough to know what all that meant, how did you get here?

Bling Bling

Today is Jewel Day! It is a fairly straightforward day, as it is celebrated by giving or receiving jewelry. I don't have very many anecdotes about today, as I have rarely given or received jewelry. I will say that this is by no means meant to be an expensive holiday. Any piece of jewelry will do, but don't let me stop you from going all out. You can give anything from the cheapest bracelet you can find to the most expensive ring. Maybe even a very special ring? ... Probably not, though. When asked why you chose to propose on a particular day, saying "Some kid's blog said it was a good day for it." is not exactly the best of answers. If you're in a street gang, maybe you could get one of your fellow hoodlums some more "ice". If that's what they call it still. I guess you already knew how "street" I was by the time I said "hoodlums", though.

Making a name for myself... after cupcakes.

Today is "Get a Different Name Day", and it's just like what it sounds. A day to simply go by a different moniker than what you have been given at birth. If you've already legally changed your name like Ochocinco did... and then did again, then don't worry because you can still participate. you don't have to go through all that legal mumbo jumbo (and I don't think they'd even bother with it just for a one-day name change). Just pick a name you like and go with it. Try to see how many people you can get to call you by your new name! Make a game out of it! Maybe introduce yourself as something different every day? It's all up to you and your imagination.

Speaking of imagination, today is also Dream Your Sweet Day. There doesn't seem to be very much info online about this day, but from what I saw and already know about dreaming and sweets, today is a day to come up with a new sort of dessert or sweet treat and make it! Or just dream it, if you're cool with leaving it there or maybe don't have the supplies. I went to Target and got some goodies to make my very own culinary creation. They are still cooking in the oven right this very second, so... I can't give you a picture of it now (I still need to decorate them before you see the finished product.) About an hour or two after this initial post, however, I'll put up a nice fancy picture and explanation of what exactly it is. So look forward to that!

Thanks, Jiminy Cricket.

January 13th is yet another double holiday! Make Your Dream Come True Day was the harder of the two to celebrate, so i began with it. Now it didn't specify as to what kind of dream (night, day, life-long), so I went with the night dream. I ate none of my usual midnight snack oddities so that my dream would be as close to not-crazy and at least partially realistically fulfillable. I dreamt that I was at the mall just wandering around and there was a really expensive jacket that was awesome. I don't really know how to describe it, but just imagine the best material and fit ever. It was pretty cool. I imagine this stemmed from me discussing going to the mall the previous night with some friends, along with my want for a new jacket, and quite possibly my recent viewing of the first two episodes of The Cape. Back to the dream, though, I couldn't afford it and had to go do favours for all the stores to raise money (enter my knowledge of how side-quests in video games work). I woke up before I rose the money. The End.

To make this a reality, I needed to go to the mall. Check. I needed to find a jacket I wanted. Check. I needed to not have enough funds. Check, check, check. All systems go. I went to some stores (Build-a-Bear, Gamestop, Bose, Apple, etc.) and asked if they needed any favours done in exchange for petty cash. No such luck! Although, I DID get a few Godiva truffle samples for free, which was pretty cool of them. But in the end, I did not get the jacket. Not exactly how the dream went, as in the dream I raised at LEAST 1,500 dollars, and that would have been REALLY nice, but alas.

Actually, not 'alas'. It was quite disappointing to not get 1,500 dollars even if I wasn't technically promised any money at all just for trying. Which brings me to the second holiday, Blame Someone Else Day. I would like to thank a certain puppet's pet insect for telling me that "If I wished upon a star" My dreams would come true. I didn't wish upon a star, granted, but that's only because I didn't remember about it until I tried to come up with a kinda witty title for this entry. Also, by the time I woke up, the stars were out of sight. For which I blame the sun! Which, while technically a star, has yet to make it known whether or not it, too has any sort of wish-granting ability. So it's obviously all their fault.
