Today is National Sponge Cake Day! Sponge cake is a delicious kind of cake that tastes really good with strawberries and you should go out and find/eat some.
... I really am trying to keep this interesting, but I am now completely out of ways to tell you to eat something. I just don't have any personal anecdotes about sponge cake. So... yeah.
I mean I work at a bakery so a good chunk of my work is describing what food is to people. It's not even hard food either! People have asked me what's in our peanut butter cookies! It's a peanut butter cookie! UUUUUUGH!!!
It is really good, though. ... Sponge cake, that is.

Apple For Teacher
Today is Teacher's Day! For some reason, this holiday is at the beginning of summer. I find it odd because, as a former high school student, this was the time that teachers were least likely to be on my mind. Although holidays are intended to be happy occasions, and I assume teachers are just as happy for the year to be over as students are. In fact I know they are. My mother teaches elementary, and she was just as happy for the 'vacation' as my little brother was. I put 'vacation' in quotes because she also says there is no such thing as a true vacation for elementary teachers. However, today COULD be. I probably should have told her today was a holiday for teachers before she left to help set things up at the school... oh well.
Today is also National Applesauce Cake Day! This kind of cake sounds like it would either be delicious or horrible. I love applesauce, and I can tolerate cake, but when I think applesauce + cake, I picture cake topped by applesauce (ew) or cake filled with applesauce (even more ew). But if I can find a recipe and al the ingredients I need, I will hopefully be proven wrong.

A-peel-ing Snacks
Today is National Candied Orange Peel Day! You may not know exactly what a candied orange peel is, but if you've had fruitcake, then you've most likely eaten some. It's fairly simple to make some without the fruitcake if you wanted to taste their flavour alone. Just peel strips of the orange peel off, boil them, wash them, boil them again, wash them again, boil some sugar into some water, add the peels, wait a little bit (somewhere under half an hour), take the peels out, let them dry for about an hour, dip 'em in chocolate, put 'em in the fridge, let the chocolate harden, eat 'em. Simple right? Is actually is and can probably be done in just around an hour and a half total. It's almost... TOO easy... I'm gonna go make some for breakfast. Breakfast is always better when it involves sugar. And chocolate. Don't judge me, there's oranges in it, too!

I'm proud of myself for using that title pun on a day that wasn't about bananas, by the way.

Funnel Spinach?
Today is Spinach Festival Day! Today is a day to pay some tribute to spinach by eating it or cooking it or at least watching Popeye the Sailor cartoons. I just got back from Six Flags and the combination of the hot, hot sun plus walking around for hours has left my stomach in quite a moody state, so I think I'll stick to watching Popeye. I also just don't have any spinach, and frankly am not well versed at all in what to make with it. Aside from Spinach Salad. Recipe: Spinach + Plate + Dressing?* (*may not be necessary)
Today is also Make Up Your Own Holiday Day! I assume that every year I can make a new one, and that my decision for today will not make every subsequent M.U.Y.O.H.D. the same celebration. In light of that made up knowledge, I choose to dub today "Funnel Cake Day". Funnel Cake is delicious. Even when it is as overpriced as it was at Six Flags, there is just no getting around the fact that it is an absolutely mouth watering treat. I mean look at this:
How could you not want to eat that?

The Magical Fruit
It's Bean Day today and I think you all know what that means, or you at least have a good guess. It's a day to celebrate beans! You may have seen this holiday before on a lot of e-card sites, and it is not uncommon for teachers to have some sort of bean related activity for elementary students today. I looked into the origin of the day, and according to what I found, it is a tradition for some European countries such as Germany to bake a cake to celebrate Epiphany (a much more well-known holiday for obvious reasons). In this cake, they would put a single bean, and whomever got the slice with the bean in it would be king for the day. I've actually had that kind of cake before, although it was not on january 6th and it was not a bean, but instead a little crown. That said, if you feel up to that, it would be a great fun way to celebrate today, but you can also just do what I plan to do and drink coffee made of fresh ground beans, eat chili with beans, and eat jelly beans.
