A Cult Classic

Today is Occult Day! The occult is something that deals with the supernatural or paranormal, and is usually cast in a none-too-positive light. I find it hi-ho-larious that the newest Twilight movie came out today, and that hi-ho-larious doesn't come up as a misspelled word. Probably due to the hyphens. I decided that the best way to celebrate... er... acknowledge today was to perform a little magic trick. And here it is. I can't say that it turned out too well for me. Let this be a lesson to all you kids. Don't mess with magic.

No Scruffy Stuff

Today is No Beard Day! That's right, if you have even the slightest of beards, today is the day to stop having it. Maybe all you have is 5 o'clock shadow, or maybe you've completely forgotten what your chin even looked like. Regardless of the situation, today is the day to shave it all off. Now, some might say that sideburns and moustaches don't count. So for all of our convenience, I've found a simple beard recognition tutorial video for us all to watch.

Hopefully everything is all cleared up now.

Molding Toys

Today is National Play-Doh Day! I'm sure all the people my age and above, and possibly some below have had Play-Doh at some point in their lives. It was and hopefully still is a major staple 'toy' in a normal childhood. I say 'toy', but Play-Doh is so much more than that. It's... anything. Literally. Well... not literally, but it's very versatile. You can make it into whatever shape you want, and then use a little something called imagination to make it real. Imagination doesn't come with Play-Doh, but Play-Doh can play a great part in activating it. As can any toy with such versatility. Plus, what a great business model. "Hey lets give kids some colored blobs to make into whatever toy they want". Play-Doh is making bank off of that business model. Not that I hold it against them. I mean, it's a great business model. And I love playdoh. I usually made picnic scenes.

Butter Bends, Right?

Today is Bad Poetry Day! I've already graced you with some of my poetry in the past, and by all technical definitions, that was bad poetry. However by my high school english teacher's definitions, it was so purposefully self-satirical that it was nothing short of brilliance. Well... she said "Good Job! 100%", but you learn to translate those sorts of things.

Today, though, I have to make up some poetry that is both technically and artistically bad. It's hard to do, since in this modern world of modern thinking, anything horrible is at risk of being labelled 'modern' and then shoved into a museum for preservation. But, I'll give it the best I have.

Here is something awesomely awful,
So much so it shouldn't be lawful.
Some of these lines will be a crawful.
Like trying to eat too many falafels.

Some might think that to make a bad verse.
You don't rhyme, forget rhythm, or curse.
My opinion is quite the inverse.
You keep the rules, but makes them perverse.

Not like that, get your mind out of the gutter.
No, you keep the guidelines, but bend them like... butter?
Stretch them and skew them until they shutter.
Just enough to make readers insanely mutter.

When you've done that, you're job is done.
Blame is sought, but in you they'll find none.
You haven't broken a rule, no not one.
Just do us a favor and steer clear of puns.

Well, there ya go. That's about as horrible as I can be at poetry. It's hard to be all that bad when you enjoy poetry and know the rules. I broke quite a few, but... I mean I kinda still like it. If you can do worse, please do so and comment with your bad poem!

Seems Fishy.

Today is National Caviar Day! I've only had caviar once in my life when a friend brought it as a show and tell to school in the third grade. At lunch, she shared with everyone and we all put a little bit on those long crackers that come in the Handi-Snacks packages. My thoughts at the time were "This isn't nearly as disgusting as I thought eating a raw egg from a live fish from a dirty tank of water would be". I haven't had any since, though... simply because it's apparently not all that common of a thing to find at your local grocery store. I'll try to find some, though. I hear the Caspian Sea has the best, though. I think I read that in a book about the prince there.

Even at the Disco

Today is International Panic Day! I do not know why, but today has been selected as a day for the entire world to panic. The most common form of panic (at least in my cartoon world-based mind) is screaming and running around in circles. I don't recommend we do this however, as I think the entire human race spinning around in circles at the same time would somehow throw off the orbit of the earth, even if it only does so at an infinitesimal rate. I also don't know why June 18th was chosen as the day to put this burden on. Sure, some monks saw crazy stuff happen on the moon, and war was declared between two nations, but that's all behind us! It's obviously more serious than our celebration of Panic Day in March. No, this is international. So find your most foreign friend and panic with them. Believe me, it's easy to find SOMEthing you can panic about. The best thing is, you can panic anywhere.

Monet Makes The World Go 'Round.

Today is International Museum Day! Thousands of museums participate in this day by having some sort of event acknowledging the important role of art, history, and science in culture. I could not find one of these museums near me that I could afford, but I DID go to a museum and snap some pics. Here ya go!

So spend some time enjoying and appreciating a museum or even just one piece of art/time of history/facet of science today. It's easy, fun, and I had a nice 2 hour walk around town looking at awesome stuff! Have fun!

Throwing Up

Today is International Jugglers Day! As everyone knows, juggling is tossing objects into the air and making sure not to drop any. I learned how to juggle using three miniature Mike and Ike boxes, but it's usually something simpler like three balls or something more dangerous like 15 flaming sabers. It can also be used for business men when they are juggling clients around their schedule, or even used for what are called "Playas" who are people who juggle people without the other people knowing for the sake of saying they can. At least thats why I assume it's done? I don't know for sure. Either way, juggling is one of those talents that has been around for an incredibly long time that still maintains it's impressiveness. It takes a lot of concentration, coordination, and strength (depending on what you juggle). It also depends heavily on showmanship. Sure you can toss any number of items into the air without dropping them, but can you make it look easy? Better yet, can you do it with ease and make it look hard? I am personally a huge fan when people throw in their own twist on juggling like this man I saw a video of a few days ago.
That's awesome.

Thank You

Today is Supreme Sacrifice Day. This is quite possibly the most serious holiday yet, as it is meant to raise awareness of the people who have given themselves up for the sake of another. It can be a day to remember those who have given quite literally everything they had in order to help others, or a day to celebrate those who risk doing so on an almost daily basis. I know that I am infinitely thankful for Jesus laying down his life in order to save everyone in the world from a horrible fate. I'm thankful for soldiers both past and present who have fought to preserve the nation that I live in. I'm also thankful for the force of men and women that I refer to as the Red, White, and Blue (Firefighters, Doctors, and Police Officers). I can't imagine that I originally thought that the colours of their uniform correlated so well with the meanings of the colours of the flag. In fact, it fits to well to have not been planned out by someone.

Firefighters work uniforms may be more of a yellow and orange, but let's face it: they are known for the colour red. Red on the flag is said to represent valor and hardiness. Valor is defined by great courage in the face of danger, and Hardiness means having the capability of enduring difficult conditions. Those two words fit my mind's eye's view of firefighters perfectly. Those two traits would be absolutely necessary when going into a burning building.

Doctors, once again, wear scrubs or something close to them, but they are known for the long white coat. White on the flag means 'purity' or 'innocence'. This fits them as well, as the last thing I think of when I think of a doctor is 'dirty'. Even the places they work always look so clean. Not to mention that their entire job is to help others keep their bodies pure. You may be saying "But what do doctors sacrifice?" Well, they sacrifice a LOT of time and money on constantly learning the new medical techniques, so they can become very easily stressed and may miss very important social occasions in order to make sure they are always prepared to help the people who need them. Not to mention all the disgusting things they must have to see in a lifetime.

Police are blue through and through. Their uniforms, their cars, even some of their buildings. The flag's blue stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Those words are so definitive of cops, I guarantee you that you can't watch a cop movie without hearing one of them said by the chief. Policemen and policewomen are always on task and ready to help preserve the peace. Even when they are off duty, they are on duty. I've made friends with a few officers of the law (literally not sarcastically), and in all my experiences with them, they have proven to be very fair purveyors of the law.

So thank you to anyone and everyone who has ever sacrifice anything for the sake of another. You are awesome and deserve to be recognized far more often than you are.

Going and Going and Going

Today is Battery Day, and I'm so pumped about about it! I'm feeling better! Recharged and ready to finally spend a day celebrating a day in the way it was meant to be. Everyone knows what a battery is. If you don't, I would say you've been living under a rock, but ancient Romans had them, too, so there is really no excuse. Batteries play a key part in our day to day lives and I originally planned to give them the day off today, but I can't! I have to use my car's battery to get places. As for my phone, camera, and laptop? ... Yes I could live without them for a day. However, I then got over my sickness and thought "HEY! I just got a whole new re-energized feel for today just like I got new batteries for me!" So I'm going to spend today testing them out. I know for a fact that some people have some work that they wanted me to do, so I'm going to go do it. So today, in honor of all the things batteries help me do, I will be a living battery that helps other people do things! Here I go!

Oh Bother

January 18th is Winnie the Pooh Day. Winnie is a bear that I grew up with as a child, and is the only character I know to often be named by what he is and not what his name is. It's "Winnie the Pooh" not "Pooh the Winnie". Besides, 'Pooh' was the swan that Christopher saw. Sigh... I guess now is not the time for semantics. For today is a day to celebrate to undoubtably brilliant series that Winnie the Pooh and all his friends in 100 Acre Woods have used to bring delight into several generations of children, and to make sure the legacy does not die. I know for a fact that my future possible children will most certainly know him, as should yours. He is a bear that I relate to in many senses, including but not limited to our thoughts on conversation and food as seen in this quote by him: “It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like 'What about lunch?'" Speaking of lunch, I skipped breakfast today and there is a rumbly in my tumbly. I go now to solve this problem. Oh and probably re-read some Winnie the Pooh books.
